One of the finest medieval castles in the country, set in 200
acres of landscaped Deer Park with Lakes and Walled Gardens. Raby
has 11thC. origins rooted in King Cnut's Northern Kingdom but
the major building works took place in the 14thC.
The work was carried out by the powerful Nevills who eventually
lost the Castle during the ill-fated Rising of the North. Sir
Henry Vane the Elder bought the castle from the Crown in 1926
and Raby has been home to the Vane family ever since.
At the heart of the Castle are the vast Barons' Hall, the Entrance
Hall beneath, with access for Carriages to be drawn straight through
the Castle and the sumptuous Octagonal Drawing Room.
There are family rooms, bedrooms for both important guests and
servants, plus functional medieval kitchens and Servants Hall
containing fine paintings, furniture and a renowned collection
of Meissen Porcelain.
The 18th century Coach House contains the family's important
collection of carriages, traps, carts and a fire-tender, including
the Duke of Cleveland's State Coach used at the coronation of
King Edward VII in 1903.
A diverse Gift Shop sells plants from the Castle Gardens. The
former stabling is now an appetising Tearoom. There's a new children's
Adventure Playground, created within a small block of woodland
adjacent to the Cricket Pitch and Picnic Area.
