Warkworth Riverside

Standing at the head of the village street, the ruins of Warkworth Castle create a dramatic view as it looks down upon the village. It is one if the country's most imposing fortifications with its cruciform keep and elegant towers. It was a Percy stronghold, and the infamous Henry Percy, known as Hotspur was born there in 1364.

The Percies also fortified one of England's few remaining 14th century stone bridges which spans the river Coquet in the village. St Laurences Church is one of the best examples of Norman architecture in the county and Warkworth has a particulary good sandy beach 1 mile away.

Fishing and boating on the River Coquet - boats can be hired to visit the Hermitage upstream, an unusual refuge believed to have been built by a hermit in the 14th century.
